Since 2010, large-scale reconstruction work has started in the central part of New York at Times Square in accordance with the approved project, which was prepared by Snohetta. The essence of the new concept is to radically change and rethink the space of Times Square: the roads overloaded with cars will become a thing of the past, and the first pedestrian zone in Manhattan will be created in their place.

Times Square is a real personification, a symbol of New York. This area can be put on one level with a statue of freedom or the same Brooklyn bridge. It is here that most mass events are carried out – festivals, concerts, celebrations of Independence Day. But earlier, the implementation of such actions was quite problematic – everything is to blame a frankly unsuccessful option to plan free space on Times Square.
Snohetta architectural experts decided to rethink reality and creatively realize the updated appearance of Times Square. With such a non-standard approach, it was possible to obtain a completely new space, the vector of which has shifted towards ordinary pedestrians. Now the entire area is planned to be completed as a completely pedestrian space, where the riot of public life will never stop.
An amazing fact: the first pedestrian street within Manhattan was built only in 2009 – until that time, the central part of the huge metropolis was dominated by motorists. Gradually, the situation is changing and New York is turning into a metropolis of pedestrian orientation.
It will not be possible to completely remove the roadway from Times Square, only soon it will be represented exclusively by four lanes in the central part.
